7 May 2012, Chisinau—The United Nations in the Republic of Moldova launched today the 8th edition of the competition for the best action to promote and protect human rights. The competition, organized each year, aims to highlight and award the most valuable initiatives and actions by civil society organizations and journalists to protect and promote human rights in Moldova. In 2012, a third category was included in the competition for public authorities who have demonstrably achieved excellence beyond the call of duty in the area of the protection or fulfilment of human rights.
The competition is based on nominations with the public being encouraged to nominate civil society organizations, journalists, media organizations, public authorities, etc., who made a genuine contribution to the human rights promotion and protection in Moldova.
In 2012, the nominations can be submitted in Romanian, English, Russian or in any minority language of the Republic of Moldova online at http://www.un.md/hrgala/hrgindex/ or to the United Nations House in Chisinau. Materials derived from the public consultation process, as well as on the basis of other materials available, including through independent research, will be reviewed by a team of NGOs and media experts and an independent board consisting of representatives of international organizations, independent experts, etc.
The winners will be announced and awarded during the UN Human Rights Gala of Awards, organized annually on December 10, Human Rights Day.
Human rights are at the core of the United Nations’ work in Moldova and an integral part of its development programmes and policy formulation. Major human rights projects include combatting torture, elimination of domestic violence, promotion of migrants’, refugees’ and stateless people’ rights, integration of vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, those living with HIV/AIDS, excluded minority groups such as Roma and other marginalized persons or groups.
